The Future of Passenger Rail Starts Now

North Carolina is growing fast—and so is the need for practical transportation that keeps our economy strong and our communities connected. Expanding passenger rail will ease the strain on our highways, link job centers, and give North Carolinians more freedom to choose how they travel.

On Track for Tomorrow

This is a once-in-a-generation chance to decide how North Carolina grows. Expanded passenger rail means:

Current Service vs. What’s Coming Next

In 2023, the U.S. Department of Transportation selected seven new passenger rail corridors in North Carolina for development through the Corridor Identification and Development Program (CID). Together with the historic $1 billion Raleigh–Richmond S-Line investment, these corridors mark the next phase of connecting our state.

Benefits of Passenger Rail Expansion

Expanding passenger rail isn’t just about transportation. It’s about strengthening North Carolina’s economy, communities, and future. Here’s what new rail service means for our state:

Economic Development
Passenger rail sparks investment in small-town downtowns, attracts new businesses, and supports jobs. From Asheville to Wilmington, rail has the power to revitalize communities across North Carolina.
Mobility & Access
Reliable, affordable rail service helps college students travel home, seniors stay connected, and families explore more of the state. Passenger rail offers freedom and flexibility.
Efficiency
More trains mean less congestion on crowded highways, lower transportation costs, and reduced dependence on cars. It’s a more efficient way to move people across the state.
Quality of Life
Passenger rail gives North Carolinians real choices. Fewer hours in traffic, more time for work and family, and more connected communities.

Why now?

North Carolina is growing fast — now the 9th largest state in the nation — and our highways are already stretched to capacity. With federal funding on the table and widespread support from stakeholders, we have a rare chance to expand passenger rail and shape how our state grows for decades to come. The momentum is here. Let’s finish the job.
